ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead is an expansion pack to the original ARMA 2. The expansion was developed by Bohemia Interactive and it was released on June 29th, 2010, for Microsoft Windows. The expansion comes with a new singleplayer campaign, three new multiplayer maps, new factions, and tons of new vehicles and equipment. As of February 2015, the game has sold over 3.5 million copies.
ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead’s action takes place in a fictional country of Takistan, three years after the Chernarus conflict that was depicted in ARMA 2. Takistan is a country that hides a nation in turmoil. As the leader of the Takistani government, Colonel Muhammad Aziz and his military launch an invasion on their neighbors Karzeghistan, a country that is rich in oil. The United States is not happy with this event, so they send their military force to prevent the attack and overthrow Muhammad Aziz and his government and back up the anti-government royalist faction. The player can take various roles within the US Army, from infantrymen, to pilots, and tank crew, or to special operatives.
Gameplay and missions
Right from the start, the player is occupied with a diverse array of missions and objectives. As an example, in one mission the player is asked to capture a mine where he also needs to search for missing hostages, disarm a bomb, transfer control of the mine to U.N., and last but not least, take control of a Soviet antiaircraft weapon to take down enemy MiGs from bombing a rebel village. The game comes with a lot of new and exciting weapons, vehicles, and equipment to help the player liberate Takistan. As it is well known from past ARMA games, the player can perform optional tasks that shape the final ending of the game.
Multiplayer and modding
Even though the main missions can be completed in a couple of hours, the replay value of the game comes from ARMA 2’s modding community. As the previous games, ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead also comes with a mission editor tool. The opportunities for mayhem are infinite. There are plenty of detailed scenarios with objectives and triggers to simple and quick skirmishes to play through. The multiplayer of ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead hasn’t changed much from the original ARMA 2. The player can play in a cooperative scenario or engage in a deathmatch, and even play the real-time-strategy warfare mode.
Building on 10 years of experience, Bohemia Interactive has built one of the most realistic combat environments in the world. The game models real-world ballistics, materials penetrations, it features a real-time day/night cycle, weather, and environmental effects. ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead is a great expansion that provides at least 15 hours of gameplay before the player even touches the editor or enters a multiplayer match. It features new campaign missions, new weapons, toys, and vehicles, and it still brings a comprehensive war experience. It achieves everything that an expansion should.
