Armello is a role-playing strategy board game that was developed by League of Geeks. The game was initially announced as an iPad title back in September 2012. In 2014, a Kickstarter campaign was launched that successfully gathered the funds needed to port the game to Steam and GOG.com. As of September 1st, 2015, the officially supports the following platforms: Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam.
One of the developers, Trent Kusters described the game as Magic: The Gathering meets Final Fantasy Tactics, and Game of Thrones meets Kung Fu Panda. The game features components of board games, strategy role-playing games, and trading card games. The game also features incredible music that was composed by an Australian musician Lisa Gerrard, one of the founding members of the band Dead Can Dance.
The game is set in a dark fairy tale – The Kingdom of Armello. The world is filled with anthropomorphic animals that are separated into numerous clans. When the current king that rules the clans becomes corrupted by a dark force called the Rot, representatives from all factions rise up and embark on a journey to become the new king or queen. The initial launch of the game had eight heroes available.
Thane The Winter Wolf is a lupine warrior equipped with a large sword; River the Howling Arrow is a wolf Archer; Amber The Far Seeker is an armed rabbit equipped with a short sword and umbrella; Barnaby Screwloose is a rabbit equipped with custom made armor and a hammer; Mercurio The Grinning Blade is a sneaky rat with a rapier; Zosha the Whirlwind is a rat assassin with a pair of daggers; Sana The Forest Sister is a bear who carries a staff of magic power; Brun Oakbreaker is a bear shaman with a totemic staff.
With the launch of the DLC Armello: Usurpers in 2016, four new heroes were added to the game: Elyssia the Wardress of Warrens, Magna the Unbroken, Sargon the Death Teller, and Ghor the Wyldkin. As of spring 2017, the Bandit Clan was also added as a paid DLC. The Bandit Clan includes Saylas the Otter Butcher, Twiss the Squirrel Thief, Horace the Badger Knight, and Scarlet the Fox revolutionary.
Armello uses dice and cards that allow the player to carry out specific actions. The cards can cast spells, heal wounds, or use items that grant special abilities. Up to four players can join a game with an ultimate goal to assassinate the king or get a prestige victory by completing every quest. The game comes with a turn-based system. In order to reduce the downtime, while one player performs his action, the others can equip items and purchase talents.
The players can choose a hero that represents a specific animal clan. Each hero has his own unique strength and weaknesses. Armello comes with a day/night cycle where some heroes have advantages based on the time of day. The playing area has randomly generated features like dungeons to explore, heroes to battle, settlements to capture, and quests to complete.
League of Geeks has done a great job trying to revolutionize digital board and card games. With Armello, they have provided a rich world where the players can craft their own stories of epic adventure. The game is packed with clever backstabbing, close shaves, shattered alliances, and empty promises.
