Batman: Arkham Asylum is a superhero action adventure game developed for the Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. It is based on the character and comics from the DC Universe, Batman, and features several of his well-known fictional foes as well as locations throughout the game. The story of the game was written by veteran Batman comics writer Paul Dini. Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and Arleen Sorkin from other Batman media revise their roles in the game to play Batman, Joker and Harley Queen respectively.
In Arkham Asylum, players take the control of Batman in a third-person view. Batman has just imprisoned the Joker following a crime, but to his surprise it turns out to be the Joker’s plan all along to get jailed – and soon he seizes control of it, trapping Batman within it, along with several of Batman’s foes like Killer Croc, Scarecrow and Bane, among others. Now it is up to the player to take on the role of the world’s greatest detective and figure out the mystery behind the uprising of Joker, while evading meta humans and discovering a deadly poison that threatens to put Gotham at stake.
In Arkham Asylum, players can roam around the gigantic Arkham Island, which is composed of a variety of places, almost like a semi-open world environment. These environments are beautifully detailed and rendered, giving it the grim-dark feel just like the comic books.
Items and weapons
The game also stays true to the comic book lore, and players can use a variety of iconic Batman weapons and tools. These weapons aid the player either when using stealth, or when in direct combat with enemies. Notable items include the batarang, the liquid detonator, the batclaw, etc. among others. Various tools are available as the game progresses.
Defeat enemies to level up
Arkham Asylum also places as unprecedented focus on character progression. By defeating enemies, Batman earns a set amount of experience points which when gathered can be used to level him up. Per every level that is upped, an upgrade is available for buying. These upgrades include anything from better efficiency in using already-possessed weapons, or learning new combat moves for Batman, which can greatly aid him in combat and add spice to it. The suit and armor can also be upgraded to tank more damage.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a genre-defining game on its own in an era when most superhero games (for example the Spiderman series of video games, except Spiderman 2 and Web of Shadows) received poor reviews from critics. It was lauded for its narrative and storyline and the graphics, visual effects and voice-acting also received praise. In fact, it is considered one of the best video games of all time and its commercial success has led to the spawning of several sequels. The first of these sequels was 2011’s Batman: Arkham City.
