Announced back in 2015, the Harebrained Schemes’ BattleTech has arrived! Newest in the franchise, BattleTech already received mass popularity by gathering the needed $250,000 on Kickstarter in just 53 minutes.
Battletech is a turn-based strategy game in which you gain control over four human-shaped combat vehicles called battlemechs, with a goal of defeating the opposite team. All based on the now classic BattleTech board game from 1984. The game is powered by Unity Engine and developed for Windows, OS X, and Linux.
While still in beta, BattleTech at the moment had only the skirmish mode PvPC, but upon game release, the online mode and single player campaign with expansion were made available.
The story is set in the year of 3025. There is a Succession War Era that started out as a space exploration. But turned into decades of raging war between powerful noble houses for control over one part of the universe hundreds of light-years away from the Earth. You choose for which house/s you will fight for as a mercenary. In this war strongest weapons were
In this war, the strongest weapons were the so-called battlemechs, and these remain the most powerful man-made weapons in space. At the time this war started, humankind was blooming, now both its morality and technology are devastated. Mechs are the highest pieces of technology people created. And you have one of the last remaining one’s Earth.
Game developers wanted the game to be more methodical and slow-paced so in-game there are a lot of details that affect the course of battle. There are numerous mechanics, like water, being used as a weapons cooler, because if you shoot too quickly weapons tend to overheat and can no longer be used. Trees and rocks are used as a cover and are necessary for survival. Mechs themselves have, next to numerous weapons and armors you can choose from, a set of skills and abilities like the high-jump. Hand to hand combat with different types of hits and finishes is also an option.
There are thirty mechs you can choose from and each of them is special. One is better with close range weapons and tends to get close to the enemy before opening fire, while other mechs are stronger when further away. There are also classes and types like heavy and light.
In a single player mode you also have features like customizing and upgrading your dropship, hiring and training pilots, engineers and other personel. Also you will have to maintain your mechs and pay their repairs because aging makes them break.
In the campaign, the player can choose to either help the rightful leader to take the throne and end the civil war. Or to mind his/her own bussines and make deals, solve small quests which get bigger and more difficult we as the player’s reputation grows.
At the start of a skirmish match you assemble your team. Choose between dozens of mechs, their pilots – mechwarriors, armors, accessories. You can also pick a map, difficulty and a house or more of these.
Before running into your enemies turns are unlimited for each of your mechs, but when you engage with enemy at sight the rules change.
Enemies are harder in each difficulty level – don’t expect any “one-shot one-kills” in this game. The fastest way to win is by surprise and to never let your guard down.
Start a match, and try to knock down your opponents while guarding your own back and flank before they get you!
