Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the fourth installment in the Call of Duty series. The game was developed by Infinity Ward and it was published by Activision in 2007. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is available for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The story of the game is set in modern times, 2011 to be exact, where a president of an unnamed country in the Middle East is executed by a radical leader, and an ultranationalist movement ignites a civil war in Russia.
The main difference between the earlier games in the Call of Duty series and this one is that the game features modern equipment and new features. The new multiplayer feature called “killstreaks” is introduced – it allows access to airstrikes and helicopter support if the player kills a number of enemies without dying in between the kills.
Unlike the previous games in the Call of Duty series, the campaign in Modern Warfare is played with various characters that have a big involvement in the plot and their stories overlap in the events of the game. This means that the player’s perspective changes from one character to another between the missions. The objectives of each mission are shown on the heads up display, which marks the direction and distance. There are various objectives such as arriving at a checkpoint and eliminating enemies in a specified location, standing ground to defend certain locations, or planting explosives on enemy buildings.
The plot is set in 2011 where a civil war has broken out in Russia between its government and ultranationalists whose mission is to restore Russia to its Soviet prestige. While all of this is happening, a separatist group that is led by Khaled Al-Asad executes a president of an oil-rich country in the Middle East. This prompts the United States to invade the country. Both conflicts are seen from the perspectives of a British SAS commando and a U.S. Force Reconnaissance Marine. The missions are scattered in various locales, such as the Middle East, Russia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
The multiplayer in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare features team-based and deathmatch-based modes on various maps. These maps have an objective that requires the team to work together and develop various strategies in order to complete them. By achieving killstreak milestones, the player is rewarded with the ability to use UAV reconnaissance scans, air strikes, and attack helicopters. The multiplayer game ends once a team or a player has reached the predefined number of points. The performance of the player in the multiplayer mode is tracked by experience points that are earned by killing opposing players, completing objectives, completing challenges, or completing a round or match. The experience points are used to unlock various levels that later unlock new weapons, challenges, perks, and gameplay modes. As cited by the critics, the gameplay in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has brought the genre to a new level of immersion and intensity that hasn’t been seen before.
