Call of Duty is a first-person shooter that was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. The game is available for Microsoft Windows, OS X, N-Gage, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Call of Duty is the iconic and first installment of the CoD franchise. The game has won multiple “Game of the Year” awards in 2003 from plenty of reviewers.

The game is set in World War II where the player is in control of an infantry soldier who comes across of various authentic firearms which he uses in combat to battle the enemies. The missions are composed of series of objectives that are marked on the compass. The player is required to complete all objective in order to advance to the next mission. The game comes with a standard “health points” system, but what is new is the “shellshock” system that simulates the real life effects of a nearby explosion. Once there is a nearby explosion, the player’s character experiences simulated tinnitus, sound muffling effects, and blurred vision. The primary focus of the game is to simulate an actual battlefield. The player moves together with allied AI soldiers that provide assistance in the battle against the enemy soldiers. There is a heavy emphasis on usage of cover, grenades, and suppressive fire. The story in Call of Duty comes in three different campaigns.

American campaign

The American Campaign follows Private Martin, a soldier from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Right after completing the basic training at Camp Toccoa in Georgia, Martin is forced to undertake a solo mission that requires him to establish a landing zone for soldiers that participate in Operation Overlord. After completing the first mission, the player has plenty more missions to complete in the American Campaign. Some of them require the player to disable several anti-aircraft tanks, destroy German artillery positions, or fend off a German counterattack. The final mission shows Martin’s unit stopping an attempt by the Germans to reinforce their troops.

British campaign

The British Campaign follows Sergeant Jack Evans and a unit from 2nd Ox and Bucks taking part in Operation Tonga. The missions require the player to clear a bridge of German soldiers, hold off an attempt by a German battalion to retake the bridge, sabotaging the Eder Dam and destroying the anti-aircraft guns that protect it. The final mission sends Evans, Waters and their squad in Germany with orders to assist the Allied assault on the city of Burgsteinfurt.

Soviet campaign

The Soviet Campaign follows Corporal Alexei Ivanovich Voronin during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942. Alexei is a young volunteer whose squad is killed when the Luftwaffe launches an attack. The missions show Alexei killing several German officers and disrupting the German offense long enough for Soviet artillery to arrive and assist. He retakes an apartment building that is in German hands, acts like a counter-sniper in the assault on Pavlov’s House. In the final mission, Sergeant Voronin is returned to his old unit where he and his soldiers storm the Reichstag building and raise the Victory Banner that ends the war.
