Cuphead is a run and gun platform video game heavily focused on boss battle. The game was inspired by cartoons of the 1930s and it is developed by Canadian brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer. The game is scheduled to release on September 29th, 2017, for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.
The game was originally revealed back in 2014 as a boss-centric platform that focuses on tough combat rendered in the style of old animation studios. The game carries the old Disney look, with washed colors that create a great retro aesthetic. The game has a unique art style and it looks and sounds like a vintage cartoon from the 1940s and 50s.
Once in the game, the player can choose between Cuphead or Mugman and play in both single player and local co-op mode. Cuphead is the character for single player mode. Once the game starts, Cuphead loses a bet with the devil and spends the entire game trying to repay the bet. Cuphead is required to do the devil’s bidding, which means hunting down a collection of bizarre monsters and beating them. The gameplay focuses on exploring Cuphead’s world and looking for weapons, special abilities and hidden unlockables in order to defeat a vast number of bosses. The characters have infinite lives and they keep their weapons between deaths. Cuphead comes with special abilities such as parry, and he can carry various color coded objects in order to fill up his special meter that will enable him to perform a special move.
When it comes to bosses, they are increasingly bigger as their difficulty ramps up. Some of them take half the screen. The easiest way to beat any boss is to watch and learn their patterns of attack, as you dodge and do damage to them. However, just as the player has worked up a tactic, the boss usually throws a curveball in the form of an attack that comes without a warning.
Despite the fact that the game is not yet released, Cuphead is expected to have multiple expansion packs that add 10 to 15 bosses each.
The initial reception by the people that have tested the game back at 2014 E3 press conference is that the game immediately stands out from the herd of the games. The game also won the IGN Best Xbox One game at E3 award in 2015.
