Deus Ex: Invisible War is an action role-playing video game released for Xbox and Microsoft Windows on December 2, 2003. Deus Ex: Invisible is the second game in the Deus Ex series, and is the direct sequel to 2000’s Deus Ex. It was developed using Unreal Engine 1.5.
Deus Ex: Invisible War takes place 20 years after the first game in the same cyberpunk dystopian area that has been rebuilt differently after a catastrophic event called the “Collapse”. Players assume the role of a new character called Alex D following a terrorist attack that destroyed almost all of Chicago. Alex is a trainee at the Tarsus Academy, an organization whose support is sought by various others. Alex D must tackle terrorist forces that threaten to dissolve world peace while being tangled in the affairs of various secret societies that involve him in a global conspiracy.
Deus Ex: Invisible War follows on the footsteps of its predecessor, and has various genre-defining elements from the game incorporated into it, further enhancing them and making them more expansive. Players have the ability to choose from multiple options with which to complete various missions in the AI mode. New to the game are emergent gameplay mechanics, which mean that relatively simple interactions in the game have the power to drastically change the outcome of the mission or the game itself.
Like its predecessor, Invisible War is played in first person in a 3D perspective. The game combines elements from various other genres such as stealth, action, role-playing among others. Stealth has been given more emphasis than the previous game.
Gone are the nano-augmentations, but this time around devices called “biomids” have been added to the game; and they, like the nano augmentations, provide the character, Alex D, with various powers such as cloaking, neural interface and an increased strength and reflexes among others, some of which are passive and some of which are active. In total 5 slots with different types of abilities are available, but only 5 can be equipped at a time. Hence players must make the decision to choose abilities that will be vital for a specific mission.
An inventory is available, in which various items can be kept, like weapons and food. Weapons are essential for combat while food replenishes health. A shortcut inventory called the “toolbelt” has been introduced, in which 12 objects can be kept and accessed quickly. It may be upgraded to allow 15, using the biomods.
Weapons in the game are of various types like pistols, rifles, grenades and machetes. These weapons are vastly customizable, and may be modified as per the player’s wish. Modifications like silencers and increments in attack power can be added.
Deus Ex: Invisible War is a game of epic proportion that mixes player choice freedom with graphics and mechanics ahead of its time. To this day, the game has sold 1.2 million copies, and has won several game of the year awards. A sequel to the game titled Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was released in 2011.
