Deus Ex: The Fall is an action role-playing game that was developed and released for Microsoft Windows, iOS and Android. It is the fourth game in the Deus Ex series of action video games, and is the spin-off to the third game titled Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It is based on James Shallow’s novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect, and was developed using the Unity engine. It is also the first and only game in the series as of yet to be available on mobile platforms.
The Fall is set in 2027, almost 25 years before the event of the first game, Deus Ex. Players assume the control of a former British soldier called Ben Saxon. Saxon leaves the army and becomes a mercenary for the private military company Belltower Associates, armed with augmentations that provide him with superhuman abilities. Augmentations have been formed as a result of advancement in biotechnology and cybertech, and now they are used my soldiers around the world. Now using a wide array of powers and wielding a new variety of weapons, the player must form his own story as he progresses and unravel the mystery behind the Fall, while being entangled in global conspiracies webbed by secret societies like the Illuminati.
The Fall brings back several critically acclaimed elements from previous games in the series. The game has branching plot lines, and small interactions in the game can have a big effect on the outcome as a whole. This prompts players to pay focus when interacting with the game elements and make decisions that are best suited to their playstyles. NPCs can be conversed with, and valuable information regarding the primary missions can be obtained from them. Similarly, there are also side missions which are given by NPCs, and upon completing the primary as well as side quests the player gets experience points which rank up their player level (unlocking augmentations with it automatically), and provide them with in-game currency that can be used to buy upgrades for weapons and other extra augmentations.
Various augmentations, which provide the player with abilities that range from passive skills like increased power to active ones that require energy, can be upgraded to be more efficient or valuable. A set of these augmentations is available to be equipped, and so players must make the decision to take whichever augmentations are best for them. Complementing the augmentations are a wide variety of weapons that range from machetes to rifles, and they can be used accordingly to the play style.
Using these abilities, players must complete a variety of missions in the play style that they deem fit. As much freedom as possible has been provided to the players, and the end result is a truly immersive and breathtaking experience that no mobile game has ever been able to achieve before.
A sequel to the main game from which it was spinned-off (Human Revolution), was released in August of 2016 on various platforms.
