The badass soldiers in high-tech suits are back in another RTS video game, Halo Wars 2! Halo Wars 2 was developed by 343 Industries and Creative Assembly and published by Microsoft Studios. The game was released February 2017 for Windows and Xbox One consoles.
The game is set in the universe of Halo in the year 2559 and primarily focuses on the human crew aboard the UNSC warship Spirit of Fire. It starts off when the crew was awoken from their cryo-sleep by a group of brutes called The Banished attacked them. The crew’s main objective is to protect the warship and defeat the brutes led by the warlord Atriox. The gameplay is a bit repetitive, only making a bit interesting with a few cutscenes and storytelling. It brings you back to the old game modes like base captures and tower defense packed with better graphics and effects.
The whole game is a bit too short and can be finished in less than a day since the main story campaign consists of only 12 main missions against the Banished. You can either choose the Human side or the Banished side and each of their leaders has their own unique ability that can be upgraded and activated during a battle. Some of these abilities consist of healing a group of units, deploying special troops, and carpet bombing an area. It feels that it caters for casual gamers rather than hardcore gamers. If you really want a more challenging RTS game, there are a lot of better games out there. But of course, you can play the two factions outside the campaign.
While playing Halo Wars 2, you get the feeling that it caters for casual gamers rather than hardcore gamers. If you really want a more challenging RTS game, there are a lot of better games out there. But of course, you can play the two factions outside the campaign which extends the gameplay quite considerably.
The difficulty of the game relies on how good the player’s strategy is. Each mission involves a prime objective that can involve capturing bases, defending the base, or simply surviving waves of enemies. However, the game also features the “optional side objective” such as defending a certain unit until the mission is complete. The animated cutscenes of the game provide context for the game and the story itself and are a key asset to the gameplay.
Keep in mind that in Halo Wars 2, combat is balanced by a “rock-paper-scissor” counter-attack system where aircraft are effective against ground vehicles, ground vehicles are effective against infantry, and infantry is effective against aircraft.
If you want to play with your friends, Halo Wars 2 offers a multiplayer mode where you can play online for up to six players. There is also the Skirmish mode which can be co-op or solo game against AI. Deathmatch involves defeating all of the opponent’s army. Stronghold and Domination are territorial modes, where it focuses on controlling bases and nodes on the map. There is also a CCG (Collectible Cards Game) which is called the Blitz and it replaces the base buildings and resources with a card-and-deck mechanic.
Halo Wars 2 gives a new genre for Halo fans who are always playing 1st-person shooters. Although considered not as good as the original Halo Wars, it is still a fun game to play!
