Sniper Elite 4 is a singleplayer, co-op, and competitive stealth game set in Italy during the World War 2. The game is developed by Rebellion Developments as the sequel to Sniper Elite III. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 14th, 2017.
Sniper Elite 4 follows the same recipe as its predecessor Sniper Elite III. The game is still played as a tactical shooter with stealth elements from a third-person perspective. The franchise’s signature X-ray kill cam is still present, and now with even more detail. It is a real blast to see the bullet travel over extensive distances before it collides with the enemy’s skull. The blast is also followed by a splatter of brain matter and skull fragments scattering on the floor. The X-ray kill cam covers everything from body parts to bones and internal organs. The player can see them being ruptured or broken by the bullet.
Rebellion Developments have also done a great job with the enemies. They are now more responsive than ever to players’ action. There are numerous improvements on the map front as well. The smallest map in Sniper Elite 4 is actually three times the size of the largest one in Sniper Elite III. All maps are now packed with open-ended objectives that the player can choose to complete in any order he wants.
The plot of the game is pretty straight forward. Sniper Elite 4 is set in 1943 in Italy and it continues the story of Sniper Elite III. In an attempt to address the rumors that the Nazis have a new weapon, the Royal Navy sends a ship to the island of San Celini to investigate. Immediately, the player notices the power of the new weapon as he witnesses the sinking of the ship. The weapon in question is a radio-guided anti-ship missile under the development of scientist Andreas Kessler and Heinz Bohm. This is where sniper Karl Fairburne comes to play. He is tasked to assassinate General Tobias Schmidt along with several other officers who were responsible for the attack. After Karl Firburne completes this task, he is set on a mission to assassinate both Andreas Kessler and Heinz Bohm.
On top of the singleplayer campaign which is a blast to play, Sniper Elite 4 comes with a multiplayer that consists of a plethora of game modes that are spread across competitive and cooperative offerings. The “Distance King” mode encourages the player to do a high range kills as the score is counted by the range of their kills rather than the quantity of them. There is also a No-Cross Team Deathmatch. In this mode, there is a line in the middle of the map that neither team can pass and the players are forced to score kills by sniping.
Sniper Elite 4 is truly a great package. If you are into a game that has sniping, positioning, mind games, then this is the game for you.
