The Sims 4 is a famous life simulation game released in September 2014 by the developers Maxis and The Sims Studio and published by Electronic Arts (EA). It is the fourth major title of the game series The Sims. The game is available for both Microsoft Windows and macOS, but is unavailable for PS4 or Xbox.

The game can be played as single-player or multiplayer, and does not require an Internet connection to play. However, during the installation, it is necessary for players to have an Origin account. In its launching year and the succeeding year, it was the best-selling PC game gathering over 5 million sales worldwide.

The Sims 4 follows the same gameplay concept as its predecessors, where the player controls a Sim, a computer-based “character. The player will control all the life aspects of their Sim. With the nature of its gameplay, The Sims 4 does not follow any linear structure and also has no ultimate goal. The player’s Sim can be controlled to do certain activities, develop and explore different personalities, and build relationships. Multitasking is also available in The Sims 4, where you can, for example, eating and socialize at the same time. Additionally, a ‘moodlet’ feature has been introduced where the Sims develop reactions to a certain task.

Various improvements and new features have been added to The Sims 4 including the infamous Create a Sim feature. Unlike its predecessors where facial and body features are manipulated through a slider, in the latest game, this can easily be done by direct mouse interaction such as dragging and pulling the facial and body features. This allows greater control of your Sim’s appearance. However, pre-designed Sims can still be selected as well. The wardrobe has also been expanded, where players can select more clothes and items. Throughout the game, life stages are attainable from baby (through the birth of a Sim), toddler, child, teenager, young adult, adult, and elder. The toddler life stage was not added until 2017, where previously a baby would have transformed directly into a child.

A returning feature as well is the traits and aspirations of each character – each character has their unique character traits such as being clever, stubborn, boring, fun etc. A major update was released in 2016 with the introduction of gender options allowing Sims of any gender to select any outfits and haircuts for gender expression. Additionally, there is a possibility of pregnancy regardless of gender, thus allowing gender fluid characters. Building and buying homes are now also combined in the latest game.

Worlds are the primary setting, place, and residence of the Sims located in a single map of individual lots. In The Sims 4, inside the worlds are the possibility for multiple neighborhoods. In its release, The Sims 4 includes the worlds Willow Creek and Oasis Spring both containing 5 neighborhoods totaling to 21 lots. Release for Newcrest, Granite Falls, Windenburg, San Myshuno, and Forgotten Hollow soon followed via the release of various expansion and game packs. Expansion packs for The Sims 4 include Get to Work, Get Together, and City Living. Game packs include Outdoor Retreat, Spa Day, Dine Out, Vampires, and Parenthood.

Patches and updates have been present since the initial release of the series. In The Sims 4, patches have been made for the addition of new features such as swimming pools, nannies, pop culture references (such as Star Wars), etc. Rumors of the release of The Sims 5 have been passing around Simmer communities (fans of the game) but Electronic Arts mentioned that the release of a future Sims depended only on the financial success of Sims 4.
