Ubisoft is back with another Tom Clancy game and this time it takes you to an open world environment.
Wildlands is the tenth installment in the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon franchise and it was developed and published by Ubisoft. The game was released March 2017, for Windows, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. It is a tactical shooter video game and the story revolves around a special-ops team called the “Ghosts” whose main mission is to destroy drug cartels and uncover the connections between Santa Blanca and the government.
The game is the first open-world environment on the Ghost Recon franchise. It moved away from the futuristic settings of Advanced Warfighter to a wider variety of environments, such as mountains, forests, and deserts. The game is played from a third-person perspective with an optional first-person view for gun aiming. You can take on the role of any member of the Ghost squad which uses modern weapons and gears unlike in Advanced Warfighter.
New features of the game include drones that players can use to view objectives or tag enemies. Different terrain vehicles like dirt bikes, helicopters, and dune buggies are also introduced in the game. Players are can play in nine different terrains which consist of mountains, forests, deserts, salt flats. The game also implemented a dynamic weather-system and a day and night cycle. Starting missions at day makes it easier for you to spot enemies while playing at night gives you a bit more tactical advantage as the dark offers players more hiding places for stealth and assassination. Recon Wildlands also features a ton of different side-missions, unlike its previous predecessors.
Reaching new locations in-game was made more creative. Players can utilize vehicles like helicopters (parachuting down), driving, or walking overland. They can also grab enemies at close range and use them as human shields while shooting. The open-world environment was really built upon in the game. for example, you can interact with NPCs while not doing missions, customize your characters, upgrade gears and weapons, etc. You have the freedom to do anything you want.
The game’s main campaign/story is capturing/killing the buchons who controls 21 areas of the map. It takes a bit of an effort to take over one are since you have to go over their henchmen first then the division’s Underboss and then finally the division’s head. Defeating them will make the division crumble which ultimately makes the cartel boss more vulnerable.
Playing in single player, you can play as one of the Ghost’s members and the remaining three player’s roles will be taken up by AI. However, there is also a co-op multiplayer mode, where you can play with 3 of your friends to explore the game world and complete campaign missions. A competitive multiplayer mode is set for release, which will introduce PvP elements to the game.
Recon Wildlands is best played with friends as it lets the players have better teamwork. The open-world environment offers a lot of stuff for players to explore and see, however, making it a decent game for single-player as well!
Do you think Wildlands is worth it? Is the open world feature a great idea or not?
